The Future of the Social Web: Towards a Fair Personal Data Economy

May 31, 2023 Consultation

This governance brief shows how the social web can become home to a personal data economy that is both fair and empowering for individuals, business and other organizations.

A fair social web stands on three pillars: user control of personal data, interoperability between online platforms and applications, and appropriate participation in the economic value that data from users ranging from citizens to businesses creates. These pillars are within reach thanks, in part, to innovative technologies, such as the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP).

But pro-active and comprehensive governance frameworks are also needed to shape the future of the social web for the common good.
