At Project Liberty, we believe diverse perspectives drive meaningful change. Our community thrives when people of all backgrounds and identities can engage authentically, share their unique perspectives, and participate in productive dialogue.

In developing our Community Commitments, we drew inspiration from examples provided by the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP) code of conduct, DWeb Camp, Mozilla, and various other organizations within our Alliance.

1. Our Shared Commitments

Respect & Inclusion
  • Respect others’ physical and digital privacy by asking for permission before sharing photos, tagging people on social media, or sharing contact information.
  • Approach conversations with honesty, transparency, and respect for others’ contributions.
  • Do not share confidential content without permission, which includes personal identifying information such as photographs and location information (“doxxing”).
Collaboration & Constructive Communication
  • Welcome new ideas and diverse perspectives; our strength lies in shared learning. Encourage curiosity by asking questions that deepen understanding, rather than defaulting to opposition. We believe questions can open the space for dialogue and discovery, while direct contradiction often closes it.
  • When disagreements arise (even if there are fundamental disagreements on world views), consider “agree to disagree” and re-center the conversation by focusing on shared goals.
  • If there’s a misunderstanding, generally assume good intent, which requires empathy and imagination; miscommunications happen, and clarifying rather than blaming helps keep the conversation constructive.
  • Proactively engage with participants you don’t yet know, as well as with ideas you might initially disagree with. Doing so can open the door to new perspectives, reveal unexpected common ground, and refine your own thinking through constructive challenge—sometimes even leading to lasting collaboration and friendship.
  • Try to use clear, inclusive language and be mindful of cultural and regional differences.
  • If you have accessibility needs, contact the organizers in advance.
  • Listen actively, try to avoid interrupting, and give people space to speak, as well as keep contributions concise and purposeful.

2. Behaviors That Undermine the Space

The following are not tolerated at Project Liberty-hosted events:

  • Physical violence and verbal threats of violence against others.
  • Harassment (on and offline), including racial slurs, offensive comments, or unwelcome physical, verbal, or digital advances.
  • Predatory conduct, such as intimidation, stalking, or manipulation.
  • Disruption that significantly interferes with the ability of others to participate and benefit from sessions or discussions.
  • Misrepresentation of name, title, affiliation, or intent.

If you feel unsafe or need assistance, contact event staff (security is on-site at some venues). To report an incident, speak with an organizer or email [email protected]. Violations may result in a warning, removal from the event, or exclusion from future events at the organizers’ discretion.

3. Participation Terms & Logistics

  • Security & Conduct: Anyone posing a security risk to themselves or those around them or violating these guidelines may be denied entry or asked to leave.
  • Photography & Filming:
    • The event may be recorded and photographed for Project Liberty channels. If you prefer not to be recorded, inform the organizers.
    • Personal recordings for private use are generally permitted, but it is best to ask first. Commercial use or distribution requires prior written consent from Project Liberty.
  • Content Disclaimer: Views expressed by speakers, panelists, and attendees are their own and may not represent the views of the organizers.
  • Event Promotion: Project Liberty encourages you to publicly share your participation at our events, with discretion. Please be especially mindful if the convening is held under Chatham House rules, closed to the public, and/or another individual/party’s participation is sensitive.

For questions, support, or to report an issue, email [email protected]. All reports will remain confidential to event organizers. Thank you for helping us create an open, inclusive, and impact-driven space. By treating everyone with dignity and respect, we can learn from different perspectives and work together to achieve our shared goals.

**Project Liberty events are those hosted by Project Liberty and Project Liberty Institute, as well as those we co-host with our partners.**
